Golden Cock Inn

The Golden Cock Inn is thought, in part, to be over four hundred years old, however, the new wing on which stands the famous Golden Cock weather vane was added in 1875. As an inn, it was obliged to serve food to travellers even if it was only bread and cheese.

The pub was always a social meeting place for the Village and had various rooms including a tap room into which no women were allowed! All the rooms had stone floors and scrubbed wooden seats. Whilst still under the ownership of the Earl of Dartmouth, the twice yearly Rent Dinners were held there until after the 1914 1918 War and it was tenanted by Seth Senior, a
well known Brewer from Shepley.

In 1945 the Earl of Dartmouth put the Pub up for sale and it was bought by Bentley and Shaw Ltd of Lockwood for £5,300. The pump which stands outside the pub today replaced the wooden pump which was used by Villagers in nearby cottages up until 1939. Today ramblers and dog-walkers sit outside on benches round the pump.

It has been considerably altered in recent years and a large car park has been built, with seating outside at the front and back of the pub. It remains a popular eating place for people from far and near, but it is also still simply the local to many Villagers.

The Women’s’ Institute met in an upper room in the pub at one time, and many times the pub has hosted wedding receptions, christening parties and funeral wakes for local people.
