The Community Plan describes a fluid agenda. Very many of the projects described within it are in progress, but very few are completed. Inevitably as the aims of the Community Group are realised, new issues which need addressing will arise. The Community Plan therefore is a framework for the future improvement of the Village.
The Aspirations of the Community
- To create opportunities to grow community spirit and improve local amenities
- To reduce the volume and speed of traffic through the Village
- To improve the local bus services
- To preserve and improve the character of the built environment, including the existing Conservation Area and two Urban Green Spaces
- To preserve and improve the existing footpaths and rights of way
- To liaise with Farnley Estates Limited regarding any potential changes to the farms, land and usage and influence them so that any changes enhance rather than be detrimental to the Village
- Develop partnerships with, and support from, local councils, councillors and other organisations to help achieve the aspirations of the Farnley Tyas Community
Benefits achieved so far
The process of compiling a Community Plan has involved the entire Village and whilst only a few members have been actively engaged in its construction, every member of the Village has been contacted, consulted and in the main spoken to about its aims. This in itself has engendered a new Village spirit . The process of conducting the survey leading to the questionnaire and producing the Plan has rekindled some genuine community spirit. People have started to take more interest in Village life.
Nothing could illustrate this more than the way the Village reacted to the licence application for a Farnley Tyas Music Festival. Community activity resulted in more than half of the Village writing to the licensing authorities and in the end the festival was withdrawn. This also resulted in three other local Villages joining with us and contacts have now been made with Stocksmoor, Thunderbridge and Thurstonland.
The Community Plan has also initiated a dialogue between the Village and Farnley Estate Limited which did not exist before. Whilst the Villagers do not necessarily concur with what Farnley Estates Limited has proposed in their own plan, the fact that there is now open communication, can only be helpful.
The formation of a Village Committee, Working Groups and production of this Community Plan has given the Village a much needed corporate voice .
What happens next?
The Community Plan is simply a snapshot of the progress made so far. Many of the projects described have long-term aims and will take months if not years to conclude. There will be village meetings held to resolve some major issues. A great deal still needs to be done to achieve the aspirations of the villagers of Farnley Tyas.
Farnley Tyas has many natural advantages. There is plenty of open space and the Village has everything that should be expected of it, a Church, a pub and a playing field but the biggest asset is the people who live in the Village. The production of the Community Plan and the surveys that were required to produce it has shown that almost all the residents care about Farnley Tyas.
How to get involved
The meetings which are held once a month at the Bowling Club on the first Wednesday of every month are open to all. If you would like to take an active part in what happens within the Village please come to our meetings and join in. Any help you could give would be much appreciated.
Communication
The committee will continue to produce a regular newsletter which will be circulated throughout the community.
A Village notice board has been erected next to the Golden Cock, on land owned by Farnley Estates Limited and which has been kindly donated by the Kirkburton Parish Council.
