What became abundantly clear from the countless meetings and conversations we had during the production of the Community Plan is that the vast majority of the people who live in Farnley Tyas are here because they enjoy the relative peace and quiet that this typical rural environment offers. The following are some verbatim responses taken from the questionnaire results which show the majority of opinions:
- We like Farnley Tyas as it is
- Keep a tight control over any development
- Would hate to see too much development
- Keep Farnley Tyas a Village
- Keep a tight control on development- don’t do to Farnley Tyas what has been done to other Villages
- Leave the Village as it is
- I’d hate to see too much development
- I have lived here all my life and don’t want it to expand too much
- Should remain a Village
- Any restoration should be in keeping with the style of the old houses
- The stone barn as part of Yew Tree Farm. This barn is very important to the look of Farnley Tyas
- We want the Village to be left alone and not made into an industrial estate
- List/preserve original Farnley Manor House in Coronation Yard.
- Protect woodland, improve footpaths
- Most people would not object to conversion of stone farm buildings

Local Development Framework Plan
Under the terms of recent legislation each council is to prepare a Local Development Framework (LDF) to replace its existing statutory development plan. The current development plan for Kirklees is the Unitary Development Plan (UDP) which was adopted in March 1999. Kirklees is preparing a LDF, which will place great emphasis on community consultation. Some residents were also aware that Kirklees is preparing a LDF and felt that inputting to this as a community would carry greater influence than a handful of individuals. The Government encourages communities to participate in planning their own future, and Village Plans can become part of local planning policy
The LDF will have the same function as the UDP, to provide a policy framework for decisions about the use and development of land. The council has published a timetable for producing the LDF so that everyone can find out what the LDF will contain and when it will be produced and when they can have a say about its content.

Kirklees is currently preparing the core strategy, which will set the overall context for all LDF proposals.
The latest LDF consultation occured early in 2008 when they sought views on a supplementary planning document for affordable housing. Following that, there will be a consultation in September/October 2008. This will take a further look at options for the core strategy, taking account of the feedback from the last consultation in June/ July 2006 and new issues, which have arisen since then. We provided input to the previous consultation in summer 2006 using the feedback from our community questionnaire.
