Farnley Tyas Bowling Club

The Bowling Club main building was formerly a hospital in Longwood, Huddersfield during the First World War and was brought to Farnley Tyas by horse and cart by a group of local farmers around 1920. Mainly made of timber, the building was heated by an old coke stove situated in the centre of the club. Access to the club used to be by an old garden type path with
a gate before the demand for modern vehicle access. The bowling green itself was constructed on a bed of clinkers taken from the old Farnley Mill which makes for very free draining and the ground has never been waterlogged. The green is maintained each year by reseeding, hollow tinning and scarifying.

Several bowling teams use the green at Farnley Tyas in eight to twelve groups of ladies, men or mixed leagues in Huddersfield and surrounding areas. The Club has also always been used for social events such as young farmers’ meetings, snooker, dart matches, dominoes, whist and bingo along with wedding and funeral receptions. The Farnley Tyas Community Group meetings are held on a monthly basis at the Bowling Club.
